Hey guys and welcome back to my channel. I'm Brit Poe and today I'm going to be talking about setting up a morning routine for success. This is the final video in my series all about self care for authors.
This video is going to be separated into two parts. The first part, I'm going to share some tips on how to start setting up a really solid morning routine that includes self care and helps funnel into a productive day and then the second half I'm going to share my personal morning routine. I'm sharing that with you to basically just give you some inspiration for your own. I'm not saying that my routine is going to work for you because honestly everybody is a little bit different and everybody has different things that will work for them and that inspire a productive day and that fills their cup. So do not feel like you have to copy mine. It's just there so that I can give you an example.
So let's talk about some tips to start getting into a good morning routine. The first thing that I want to cover is that I feel like a lot of people, especially when it comes to a morning routine, they feel like a routine is something that they do one time and then it's automatically just going to happen every morning, that it kind of just becomes a habit right off the bat, and that's simply not true.
A routine is basically just a collection of habits and rituals that you do for yourself. And as with habits, it takes practice and it takes dedication in order for it to actually happen and get done. It's not just going to naturally occur. So it does take some work and I think that's a common misconception that people have when it comes to setting up a morning routine.
So my next tip is to start out small. Don't force yourself to wake up two hours earlier than you usually do and do this huge long list of things that are completely out of the normal for you. Because that's going to be like whiplash. Your body's not going to know what the heck you're doing to it and why. So what I recommend is to start small. If you need to wake up 30 minutes earlier, little by little, and maybe just do three things in that given time that you've been wanting to do, that's perfectly fine and you can start adding to that more as time goes by. But just like with the first tip, don't expect it to be immediate, even though the results might be immediate, the routine and the habit of it all is not.
And when it comes to consistency, if you're one of those people who kind of struggle with being consistent with things, my tip to you would be that it always starts with your mindset. So if you're dreading doing something like this it might not be the best thing for you to do right now. Maybe you need to go back and work on your mindset around these activities and why you're really actually doing them and how they're going to benefit you. Because just with almost everything, it starts with your mindset.
Next is to be patient with yourself. Like I've mentioned already a few times, it's gonna take some time and some work to develop something that you're doing every single morning.
And then the final one would be to track your progress or track your habits every morning. For you, you might really need an actual physical checklists to run down the items every morning. For me, I love checklists and so inside of my Trello account, under my My Week board, I actually do have my morning routine set up in a checklist and on days that I really need the extra help or the extra boost, I will go through that checklist and mark the items off as I do them because that inspires me to see it completed. Checklists get me going. And so it's okay if you need to do that. If you don't use Trello, then you can simply write it out on a piece of paper or a type of a spreadsheet or something else like that, if that's going to help you.
Now we're going to get into the section where I'm actually sharing my own morning routine with you and I'm actually pulling it up right now so that I don't forget something on a little app that I use. It's called TimeTune. I don't know if you can see that, but that's what I have set up on my phone. It's an app and it lets you set up different routines here on a screen that looks like this and I have my entire daily schedule sort of on this because while I have it in Trello (because I use Trello to plan and literally everything in my life) I like that TimeTune actually will send me notifications to my phone so I can actually look at this and have it set up. So at the top of my phone here it says, now this is what you're supposed to be doing, and as a systems and schedule lover, I really love that aspect of it. So it's called TimeTune in case you're wondering.
Before I get into sharing this with you, keep in mind that I am an extremely early riser. I thrive off of being able to wake up really early and it's also the only time in the day that I really have quiet because my kids are asleep and seeing as I'm a homeschool mom and an author and a business owner, the only time I can really get quiet time is when the kids are asleep. So I work in the mornings and then a big chunk during nap time. So just keep that in mind.
4 AM - So I wake up every single morning at 4:00 AM. My first alarm goes off at 4:00 AM. That's not to say I'm out of bed by 4:00 AM because I honestly snooze probably one or two times at least every single morning. That's just who I am. I snooze. My alarm goes off at 4:00 AM, but by 4:30 I'm in the living room. I'm dressed for the day. Now sometimes that's pajamas. But what I mean by that is that I have brushed hair, clean teeth, those sorts of things.
4:30 AM - And then every single morning I sit down with a book and read. So I read for at least 15 minutes because I feel like when I start my day off reading versus something like screen time, I'm so much more refreshed as the day goes on. I'm not waking up and immediately staring at a screen and I really love that because I work on screens all the time and having a set time where I'm actually reading every day allows me to actually read every single day. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to get to it as much and I know this for a fact because I've tried not having it set my morning routine and being like, "Oh, I'll just read at this time." And then I never get to it. And I love reading. It's something that I personally love doing. So I read every single morning and then I do my exercises.
4:45 AM - Sometimes it's different. Sometimes I use an exercise program. Other times it's just yoga. It really just depends on what I'm feeling for the day.
5:15 AM - So then I exercise for about 30 minutes and then I spent some time doing self care and getting myself ready and refreshed after working out.
5:30 AM - I clean myself off and then I sit down with my planner every morning and I go through all of the things that I wrote down the night before. I always do a big planner session right before I go to bed. And so I'll re-meet with that in the morning, add anything, change anything that I need to and just get a general overview of what I'm doing for that day.
And then this is where I make myself a cup of coffee and I sit down and I check my email and my social media and reply to whatever I need to, reply to comments and interact with other people on social media, because throughout the day I don't have a lot of time to actually show up and be active, especially with my kids running around at all of that. So that's what I do that and I'm making sure I have a nice warm cup of coffee to help me get through that.
So that's what I do in my mornings, and then from that point on, I actually kind of transitions into work hours where I'm working until 8:00 AM and that's it. That's really what my morning routine looks like. It's very simple, but in just that short amount of time, I get so much done and set myself up for a really productive day. A really happy day. Usually on days where I've done my entire morning routines, start to finish, I feel really good throughout the day and I've noticed that it really does make a change on how I function and how how much I'm thriving throughout my days. Especially when it comes to my work sessions. So I encourage you to start thinking about some things that you can do, maybe wake up a little bit earlier. Or if you already wake up, think about some things that you can actually start doing in that time that you haven't, that really do set you up for success throughout the day.
Some other things that you might want to incorporate into your morning routine are journaling or meditation or a nature walks or visits to the gym even if that's something that you want to do. Different house chores so that you can get it away or get it done in the morning so you don't have to worry about it for the rest of the day. Those kinds of things are also what you could think about adding into your own morning routine, depending on what you want to do and what helps you thrive- having that done and taken care of in the morning.
