Self Care Practices for Authors

Hello everybody, welcome back to my channel. I'm Brit Poe and today I wanted to talk about self-care as an author. This is the second video in a series that I'm running on my channel right now that is all about self-care and how your emotions play into your productivity and your work. So let's get to it.

On the last video, I talked a little bit about how your emotions play into actions, how that relates to productivity and how you approach your working session when it comes down to actually start writing and getting stuff done. And today I wanted to elaborate a little bit more on exactly how self-care plays into the whole productivity aspect and what are some ways that you can practice the self-care for yourself as an author. And, what are the things that I believe are essential that you should be doing self-care wise so that you are able to show up as your best self every single time.

Have you ever had one of those days where you wake up and you have this to-do list that you know you're supposed to do, but you just feel like you're floating around endlessly? Like you're running in a circle. Like you can't seem to get anything done. You're lacking motivation and you kind of just feel drained. Maybe you'll sit down at your a blank computer screen and just stare for ages, not knowing where to start.

I know I've had plenty of those days in my own writing journey where I just feel completely overwhelmed or disoriented or like I don't know where to start. And, maybe it even ties into where I have disinterest in the things that I'm trying to do and the things that I want to do or were supposed to do that day. In my experience, whenever you start to feel that way, it can get really, really difficult to pull yourself out of that place and to break that cycle. It's times like this where I believe that it really truly is essential to have good self-care practices developed, good things that you're doing for yourself, so that you can regenerate those creative juices, the inspirational flow of your mind, and rejuvenate it. So that when you do sit down, you can always sit down and be dedicated.

You can be clear-headed and you can really start working on your goals - at whatever task is at hand.

I know that for some people it may seem a little counterintuitive to actually step away from your work, to step away from those deadlines, to step away from all of the business stuff and actually care for yourself for a little bit. But let me just tell you this- there should be absolutely no guilt associated with self-care practices. It should really, truly be an essential thing that you are making time for. So if you've been looking around for whatever piece of permission you need to start doing these things for yourself, then take this as your permission and start incorporating some of these practices into your daily life.

There are really a lot of ways that you can practice self care for yourself, but today in this video, I'm going to talk about four main ways, or four main categories, of self-care practices that you can start to incorporate into your daily life.

Now, I really do think that there are five key categories to self-care, but the fifth one is routines which is going to have an entire video to itself later on in the series. So I'm not gonna talk about that one in this video. If by the time you're watching this, I've already uploaded it and recorded it and it's been published, then you'll see a little card on the top corner of the video where you can go and watch that video as well. But today I'm just going to talk about the four categories.

Keep in mind that as I go through these, you don't have to do every single one of them. Some of these may not resonate with you and it might not be something that you enjoy doing for yourself. So just skip that one and try something else. The point is, I'm giving you some examples and some different activities that you can really start to incorporate and to play with to really just start working on your self-care.


So the first category here is move and this goes for any movement that you really enjoy doing for yourself. Whether that is morning yoga or afternoon runs or high-intensity interval training (HIIT) - anything that you really love to do to get your body moving. Maybe it's simply a daily walk. It can even be something as simple as if you have a desk job or you are a writer like me who's at the computer frequently for the majority of the day, then just taking breaks from work. Standing up and doing some stretches can really, really help. It can get your brain feeling so refreshed. It can help your body feel better so that when you sit back down to the computer, you're ready to start working again. It will also minimize those different aches and pains that are commonly associated with sitting at the computer for long hours every single day.


The second category of self-care that I want to talk about is flow. So flowing isn't something that you can actually physically do, right, but what I mean by this is activities that encourage free, clear thinking. For example, journaling or free writing - writing that has nothing to do with any of your actual projects, but something where you just sit down and you start writing whatever comes to mind. Just throwing all of the information, all of the thoughts that are in your head onto paper, just to get them out of your head.

Slow Down

The third category that I want to talk about is to slow down. These are things that you're going to do where you're not actually doing anything. For example, slow breathing, just being completely still and focusing on breathing in and breathing out. It can also be meditation if you like to do meditation and just coming to being really fully present in the moment. I like to do this in a place where I feel really comfortable or a really beautiful place, so maybe it's a park or it's your living room couch or it's your bed or wherever you feel really comfortable and you can be really relaxed. Because, I know for a lot of people slowing down and doing nothing can be sort of uncomfortable and make you feel a little bit awkward, but it really does give your brain a chance to do nothing for a change, to just be itself and to relax and to enjoy this moment and to refresh itself.


And the fourth category is indulge. This is absolutely a favorite for me because I love my indulgences. So for some people this is going to look different than somebody else's. In my case, I love turning the lights out, setting some candles out, taking a really long hot bath where it's just completely quiet or maybe I have some music playing in the background.

Some other ways to indulge is to have your favorite treats. So actually buying a bag of chocolate and sitting down and eating that chocolate for yourself and enjoying every single bite of it. Another way that I like to indulge into self care for myself is to sit down and allow myself to binge watch some episodes of whatever Netflix series I'm currently watching, because I love me some Netflix. Allowing me to spend that time on a given evening binge-watching my Netflix shows really does allow me to show up to my next work day feeling refreshed and ready because I've spent time doing what I want to do and indulging in myself and giving myself the self care that I need in order to function to the top of my ability.

So if your indulgences are something like that where people tell you it's totally counterproductive - maybe you like to play video games. I totally love to do that. Me and my husband used to sit and play video games for hours every single day. This was mostly before children, but still, if you have an activity that you love to do that isn't really looked at as being related to productivity, count it as an indulgence and seriously allow yourself time to do that.

I hope this video has given you some really great ideas of some examples of things that you can start incorporating into your daily life. Keep in mind the activities that I've mentioned here don't have to be done every single day or for even for long periods of time. So for example, with meditation, you don't have to sit and meditate for 30 minutes in order for it to count. Simply getting up, sitting down somewhere quiet and meditate for five minutes - that counts as self care and over time it will help your productivity increase.

So I encourage you to pick out a few of these activities and start trying them out and start incorporating them into your day so that you can really start refilling your cup. This was, you can show up to the best of your ability every single work session.
